WEED, WATER AND COMPOST
SOCIAL
This committee is responsible for the fun! And who doesn't like to have fun? This group will organize ways for plot holders and community members to come together and get to know each other.Committee Chair:
- Reserve space for the Seed Exchange Kick off party
- Send out Evite Invitations
- Arrange the end of the season Harvest Party
- Plan other outings such as wine and cheese evenings in the garden
- Set up and breakdown the events
- Create center pieces
- Purchase plates, silverware, cups, etc.
EDUCATION
We aren't talking about reading, writing and arithmetic. We are talking composting, transplanting, harvesting and soil amending to name a few. This group is here to organize classes and educational events for plot holders and our community.
- Reserve event space for classes
- Help arrange the teachers or leaders for classes
- Assist with set up and breakdown of meetings
- Work with other sustainable organizations in town to co-op on some classes
- Send class information to website designer
- Put flyers out around town
- Contact local media to get the word out about events
COMMUNICATION
There is so much going on in the garden how do I keep up? Simple. Through the Communication Crew! This group is in charge of helping to get the information out to plot holders and the community. What good does it do to plan all these great events if no one knows about them?
- Post events, pictures and fun stuff to Facebook
- Coordinate the information for the email blast
- Put flyers around town about SCG events
- Get in touch with local media to promote events and the organization
- Puts relevant information on the bulletin board
- Maintains the database
- Coordinates information to go to the website designer
END OF SEASON
No one likes to see the garden season come to an end. But all good things must come to an end. This committee is in charge of winterizing the garden so it is ready to go for next year.
- Call the town to turn the water off
- Find a place to store the hoses for the winter
- Rototiller the plots
- Take the compost to the landfill composting center
- Communicate the end of the season wrap up rules to plot holders
- Evaluate the plots after they have been cleared
- Coordinate the list of returning plot holders
FUNDRAISING
The saying goes, "money doesn't grow on trees." Well the last time I checked it doesn't grow in our garden either. Although that would be nice! We need to have funds to sustain and improve our garden and its' programs. These team is in charge of grass roots fundraising and grant writing.apply for local and national grants
- Create a sponsor report to send to donors and grants
- Create a network of local companies and people to help with in kind donations
- Plan for a good old fashioned fundraiser such as a Cook Book or Dinner
- Organize a selling committee
- Come up with creative ways in which we can bring money in
- Solicit businesses to support our sponsor beds
MAINTENANCE AND CONSTRUCTION
It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it! This group will help plan any major building projects to help improve the garden and all of its programs.
- Work day for the bridge construction
- Work day for the memorial benches
- Construct or assemble a small storage shed
- Coordinate with local businesses for in kind donations for these projects
- Stain and seal the fence
- Aid in making the composters standardized
- Rejuvenate gravel beds and reapply oil to the beds
WEED, WATER AND COMPOST
Sure all the plot holders will be responsible for helping out with their week of watering, composting or weeding, but someone has to make sure that these jobs are getting done and do a little extra to make sure these programs are successful.
- Creates a sign up sheet for weed, water and compost weeks
- Organizes a database so if someone has to switch their week they can contact people
- Works to aerate the compost bins
- Overlooks the garden to make sure that everyone does their job
- Create educational pieces for the composting area
- Plans out where the composters will be stored in the winter
- Researches a possible in ground watering system
